Once the filter is made connect the airline to the air pump place the filter totally immersed and switch on the air pump.The air bubbles will rise in the tube and draw water with them. As this happens water will rush in through the filter down through the holes that you melted in the bottom piece. this causes a flow through the filter.

i was thinking the plants give off oxygen and takes in co2 during the lights or on. and turn on the air pump at night to keep the co2 stable

Growing mushrooms… An aquarium air pump is supplying the air. I want to make sure the air being supplied is free of pollen, spores, dust, and stuff…
You guys! You’re not addressing the question at hand in any regards.
Christ Pleccy, why are you even debating whether or not an air pump sucks air? Was that even in question here? Besides, I know how my air pump works, and in my opinion, the movement of the diaphragm causes air suction.

My review on air pump unit “non-noise”. It is very small and a bit less noise than ordinary air pump unit. Although this pump isn’t exactly “non-noise” . I recommend you to have it for 20cm cubic aquarium or less size since this pump doesn’t make much air pressure and doesn’t make stress to fishes in a tank by it. うーんノンノイズって名前の割りに静音性について自信無さげなパッケージといい、説明書が無い事といい少々不安だったけれどもまぁ割りにうるさくはないかも。ただ無音というにはこの低音は厳しいのでやっぱり寝室に置いた場合は気になる人と「慣れれば平気だ！」って人に分かれそう。 ポンプはちなみに水槽に引っ掛けなくてもテーブルに置くことも出来るけどポンプ上部を触ると結構熱が発生している事が判明したのでポンプを平面に置くなら金属製の板とかで出来ているものがいいかも。パーツはチープ。箱も簡素（エコと言えばエコ）。ポンプ自体の音は水心SSPP-7Sの方が静か（どちらも気になる方はいると思うが）。価格はホームセンターで1100円くらい。
